Whether you are looking to expand your career knowledge or prepare for university study in the U.S, Extension is the perfect place to earn a degree while immersing yourself in the dynamism of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Its degrees and certificates are taught by professionals, reviewed by Berkeley and match the quality and teaching standards of the university. Studying at UC Berkeley Extension means becoming part of a robust learning and professional community, where teachers bring years of field experience to the classroom and valuable insight into their careers.
Designed for high school seniors and recent graduates, this program prepares students for university study. Students can choose to attend CFP for a summer term (2 months) or apply for the fall or spring semester or a full academic year (spring and fall), sometimes called a “gap year.”
Students attend college-level courses (around 20 hours/week) where they’ll build English skills and become familiar with typical U.S. university classroom discussions and assignments. They’ll also receive test preparation for TOEFL scores and get personal college admissions advising.
This program is best suited for undergraduate and graduate students who wish to complete a “semester or year abroad.” You’ll study alongside UC Berkeley students, take a variety of courses, refine your English skills and receive academic advising and graduate school admissions support. You’ll have the option to choose between an assortment of classes or focus on a specific subject with these tracks: business, architecture/city planning, literature or communication.
Focused on career-based business skills, the IDP track trains students to build their knowledge of global business and economic issues and gain the skills they need to start their own business and get a competitive edge in the global marketplace.
These flexible program formats lets you customize your learning to fit your priorities and achieve your career goals. You’ll be able to choose from topics such as marketing, entrepreneurship, business administration and more, or combine coursework with an internship to build your network and skills—all in less time than an M.B.A. program!
These certificates offer a specialization in a specific field—in business, art, design or behavioral health sciences—and practical skills that you can apply immediately.
Courses are offered in evenings and on weekends in locations in San Francisco and Berkeley, communities very close to Silicon Valley’s creativity and innovation.
San Francisco is just a 20-minute ride away from the Berkeley campus on public transportation. Explore the United States’ oldest Chinatown, world-class museums and shopping, historic Victorian architecture and more. Looking to get out of town? Napa Valley, with its wineries and restaurants, is just an hour north. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also fly to Los Angeles or Las Vegas, or drive to Lake Tahoe where you can enjoy summer on the lake or visit a ski resort during the winter. Finally, Yosemite National Park—featuring spectacular rock formations, hiking trails and waterfalls—is also within driving distance.
The city of Berkeley itself and the greater San Francisco Bay Area offer plenty of museums, cafes, parks, music and more to fill your weekends while introducing you to American culture. Did you know UC Berkeley has also been named one of the best colleges for food in America? You can eat lunch with your classmates on campus everyone or meet with friends for dinner at one of Berkeley’s many excellent restaurants.
