As well as investing vast resources in advanced academic programs, SLU offers pathways to improving English proficiency and aims to immerse students in American culture and society.

Courses and Specialties

Upon application to a program of study at Saint Louis University, prospective students are expected to provide official school transcripts translated from their native language to English, a personal statement covering why they want to study at SLU, and verified IELTS or TOEFL language proficiency scores to a standard of 80 on the TOEFL or 6.5 on the IELTS.

While English proficiency in particular is a requirement of admittance, students who do not meet the academic or language requirements retain the possibility of enrolling in one of two preparatory programs; the Pathway Program or the Academic English Program.

Pathway Program:

The Pathway program offers a two-semester long course of study guaranteeing immediate enrollment into SLU upon completion. Choosing from a variety of courses in aerospace engineering, business, computer science, information management, mathematics, and general studies, students enrolled in the Pathway Program undertake a foundational year of study in which 9 SLU college credits are earned and immediate admittance to SLU is granted.

To enroll in the Pathway Program, prospective applicants must score a minimum of 65 on the TOEFL or 6.0 on the IELTS. Tuition for the program is set at $32,960 as of 2016.

Academic English Program:

For students who do not meet the language requirements for general or Pathway Program admission, the Academic English program prepares international students for university study in the United States. Over the course of a rigorous 10-week program, students receive high-quality English language instruction and learn the listening, speaking, reading, writing, and study skills necessary for academic success at SLU.

As of 2016, the tuition for the 10-week Academic English program is set at $7,400.
