The name « City » was adopted to reflect the long standing relationship with the City of London. City is a member of the ‘University of London’, becoming a part of the 18 Colleges and ten research institutes that make up the University today.
At City University, there is a vibrant international community, with 48% of the student population being international. In 2016, City was ranked the 53rd most international university in the world by « Times Higher Education ». City currently has over 18,000 students from more than 160 countries. It is well-known for its exceptional Alumni Network, in fact, more than 130,000 former students from over 180 countries are members.
Located in the centre of London, City is one of the rare London universities to have a traditional campus. All classes are taught on the same premises and students live nearby in university halls of residence or private accommodation, depending on personal preference. In this respect, student housing is subsidised by the university so that students are able to live in the centre of London at an affordable price (from 600€ per month).
City University London is made up of five faculties; Sir John Cass Business School, The City Law School, The school of Arts & Social Sciences, The School of Health Sciences and The School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering.
Cass Business School is the most well-known faculty with a world class reputation. It offers one of the best Business degree programmes in the UK as well as a world-class master’s degree programme. Cass Business School is part of the 1 % of business schools worldwide have ‘triple-crown’ accreditation, meaning they have accreditations from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Association of MBAs (AMBA) and the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS), just like HEC and London Business School.
City’s Law faculty offers a large range of degree programmes including; International Law, Human Rights and Business Law. Margaret Thatcher studied for her master’s degree at City during the 1950’s and she is not the only public figure to have studied at City with Mahatma Gandhi and Tony Blair also completing their degrees here!
The School of Arts & Social Sciences represents 87% of City’s Music-related research that was rated as either ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in 2014’s Research Excellence Framework, placing 11th in the UK.
The Health Professions courses at the School of Health Sciences were ranked 1st in London and 2nd in the UK by the Guardian University Guide in 2018.
The School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering hosts some of the best engineering courses throughout the UK, in fact, both Electronic & Electrical and Mechanical Engineering courses were ranked 2nd in London and 11th in the UK by the Guardian University Guide in 2017.
London has been named the fifth best city worldwide in which to study by QS Best Student Cities, 2016. Alongside London’s “world-class” facilities and links with business and the professions, the city was also commended as “one of the planet’s great centres of culture and creativity”.
You should explore the local area; City University London is located in Islington, an area of central London that is known for its great cafés, bars and restaurants, theatres and arts venues. Islington is known for its creative and artisan shops and is just a few stops away from London’s leading shopping area – the West End, so make sure to visit Oxford Street and Covent Garden.
With the University being located at the heart of the Capital, you won’t have to go far to find new bars or clubs. During the week you’ll find a huge range of events, many of which are free or have student discounts.
City’s location and its links with the City of London make it the perfect place not only to study, but also to build networks that will carry you throughout your career. London is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world, making it the perfect location for an international student.
City’s main campus is in central London in the Islington borough, but has additional campuses in the city centre, the West End and the East End.
University accommodation is split across five areas; Liberty Court, Liberty Hall, East Central House, The Gardens Halls and Tufnell House, all which are easily accessible from the University.
There are also options for private accommodation in the local area if University accommodation isn’t for you. Students have the following to choose from; Alliance House, Green Willen House and Pure City.
Undergraduate applications to City University are made through UCAS. Study Experience is specialised in supporting and helping international students throughout the UCAS application process. At postgraduate level, applications are made to the university directly, with our help.
Complete applications must include: a CV, a translated Baccalaureate transcript, IELTS results, and a personal statement. The Study Experience team assists students in the writing of their personal statement and directs them towards the most relevant IELTS preparation programme according to their level and needs. Regarding English entry requirements for City University, students must achieve a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 in each of the test areas (reading, writing, speaking and listening).
