City, University of London was founded in 1894 as the Northampton Institute and later became a university in 1966 by royal charter. City University London is a public research university based at the heart of London. It is organised into five schools, within which there are around 40 academic departments and centres, including the Cass Business School. The university itself is among some of the most prestigious Universities throughout the UK. In fact, it has ranked 27th in the « Times Higher Education » (Table of Tables) alongside the leading Russell Group universities.

The name « City » was adopted to reflect the long standing relationship with the City of London. In September 2016, City joined the federal University of London, becoming part of the 18 Colleges and ten research institutes that make up the University today. City prides itself on its innovative approach to education. The passion, commitment and academic excellence has been recognized by a Silver award in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). In 2014, 75.7% of City’s submissions to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) were rated as being of world leading 4* and internationally excellent 3* quality.

The University has a vibrant international community, they welcome students, academics and professional staff from all around the world. In 2016, they were ranked the 53rd most international university in the world by « Times Higher Education ».

City currently has over 18,000 students from more than 160 countries. It is well-known for its exceptional Alumni Network, in fact, more than 130,000 former students from over 180 countries are members.

City University London is made up of five schools; Sir John Cass Business School, The City Law School, The school of Arts & Social Sciences, The School of Health Sciences and The School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering.

Cass Business School has a world class reputation. It is consistently ranked amongst Europe’s leading business schools and is part of the global elite of business schools that holds the rare label of ‘triple-crown’ accreditation. In fact, less than 1 % of business schools worldwide have ‘triple-crown’ accreditation. Meaning that they have acquired accreditations from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Association of MBAs (AMBA) and the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS).

Cass is renowned for having a knowledgable academic staff that have hands-on industry experience with long-term links to business. They also have strong connections with City firms, international business and the community of students, the alumni, and its partners.

City Law School was actually the first school in London to educate students and practitioners at all stages of legal education.

The School of Arts & Social Sciences represents 87% of City’s Music-related research that was rated as either ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in 2014’s Research Excellence Framework, placing 11th in the UK.

The Health Professions courses at the School of Health Sciences were ranked 1st in London and 2nd in the UK by the Guardian University Guide 2018.

The School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering hosts some of the best engineering courses throughout the UK, in fact, both Electronic & Electrical and Mechanical Engineering courses were ranked 2nd in London and 11th in the UK by the Guardian University Guide 2017.

How to apply to City University

Undergraduate applications to City University are made through UCAS. Study Experience is a specialist in supporting and helping international students through the UCAS application process. At postgraduate level, the applications are made to the university directly, with our help. 

Complete applications must include: a CV, a translated Baccalaureate transcript, IELTS results, and a personal statement. The Study Experience team assists students in the writing of their personal statement and directs them towards the most relevant IELTS preparation programme according to their level and needs. Regarding English entry requirements for City University, students must achieve a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 in each of the test areas (Reading, writing, speaking and listening).

Living and studying in London, the capital

London has been named the fifth best city worldwide in which to study by QS Best Student Cities 2016. Alongside London’s “world-class” facilities and links with business and the professions, the city was also commended as “one of the planet’s great centres of culture and creativity”.

You should explore the local area. City University London is in Islington, an area of central London that is known for its great cafés, bars and restaurants, theatres and arts venues. Islington is known for its creative and artisan shops. You’re just a few stops away from London’s leading shopping area – the West End, so make sure to visit Oxford Street and Covent Garden.

As the University sits at the heart of the Capital, you won’t have to go far to find new nightclubs. On any night of the week you’ll find a huge range of events, many of which are free or have student discounts.

City’s main campus is in central London in the Islington borough, but has additional campuses in Islington, the City, the West End and East End.

Accommodation is split out across five areas; Liberty Court, Liberty Hall, East Central House, The Gardens Halls and Tufnell House. All which are easily accessible from the University.

There are also options for private accommodation in the local area if University accommodation isn’t for you. You have the following to choose from; Alliance House, Green Willen House and Pure City.
