Massey University is the nearest thing New Zealand has to a national university, with nearly 18,000 students, 3 main campuses in 3 different cities and 17,000 extramural students both in New Zealand and abroad. All Massey campuses offer a range of quality facilities and run events including conferences, exhibitions, public lectures, performances, seminars and workshops throughout the year in aim to enhance the student experience. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate study and research programmes, where students will experience the interactive, progressive and research led approach to learning at Massey. It is also a leading university in New Zealand for distance learning, both for undergraduates and postgraduates. Massey University’s campuses

Albany Campus, Aukland

Located on the North shore of New Zealand’s largest and most urban city, Auckland is home to a diverse multi-cultural population. The pittoresque campus is 20 minutes away from the city centre by car and a five minute walk from the large Westfield shopping centre, comprising of many shops, movie theatres and food outlets. For travelling further, the university bus service runs regular routes around the North Shore region, reaching more than 30 sandy swimming beaches as well as a range of other facilities and entertainment. This include the city’s art galeries, North Harbour Sports Stadium, libraries and performing art centres. The campus itself also provides students with various accommodation options and a host of quality facilities including a Student’s Association centre, a recreation centre, club facilities, student lounge, bar and other eateries. A university shuttle bus runs consistently throughout the week to transport students between areas of the campus.

Manawatū Campus, Palmerston North City

Located near Palmerston North city, the original campus of Massey university is listed as a New Zealand Botanical Garden, with green fields, woodlands and heritage buildings. There are currently 50 sports and cultural clubs on campus as well as a recreation centre, an athletics track, an equestrian centre, several libraries and great accommodation options. A bus service, free for students, run consistently between campus and the town. Palmerston North is a compact, yet friendly student town with affordable accommodation, great bars, plenty cafés and restaurants, a cinema, live theatre, music, shopping and even an airport. The city is close to west coast beaches and is in close proximity to Hawke’s Bay wine region, skiing and snowboarding facilities at Mt. Ruapehu and New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington.

The Wellington Campus

This Campus is known as the creative campus of Massey university, established as a centre for research and excellence. It is home to state-of-the-art digital sound, animation and filming suites, media and drama labs as well as the Pukeahu ki Tua, a Living Lab focused on creating positive change among the Massey community. It aids students in improving their employability through entrepreneurship and experimental learning opportunities whilst also driving internal and external communication and stakeholder engagement. Wellington is a compact city located between a magnificent harbour and green hills, where shops, art galleries and great restaurants are all within walking distance. The university is located near the city’s artistic and entertainment quarters of Cuba Street and Courtenay Place.

Art and Design

The College of Creative Arts at Massey is a world-class art and design school that equips students with a knowledge base and skill set that enables them to flourish in the creative industries, win awards and hold key positions that define creative thinking in businesses around the world. This school offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in contemporary art, photography and design.

The Massey art faculty is comprised of leading practitioners, researchers, artists, curators and critics who are specialists in their fields. Students will have access to generous fine art studio spaces, workshops and laboratories to expand their skill set. The creative art courses at Massey produce graduates who are inventive, creative, dedicated and resilient. They are prepared for a career in practicing art, starting their own businesses or working with connected industries. 

Design students are offered five major specialisms including fashion, industrial, spatial, textiles and visual communications with a number of available minor options as well. This enables exploration and development of interdisciplinary design skills. Throughout their course, students will address local and global issues to inspire design solutions and will also be able to enter various national and international competitions. Many Massey students have obtained the highest level of success in these.

How to Apply to Massey University

International students must obtain a score of 6.0 in the IELTS test. A score below 6.0 but above 5.0 will qualify them for entrance to a pathway programme that aims to improve students’ level of English prior to starting their university degree.
