Courses and Specialties

Founded in 1969 as Malaspina College, VIU offers a variety of programs including diplomas and degrees in the areas of science, tourism, history, international relations, communication, and medicine. However, VIU is best known for playing host to a truly outstanding business college and takes pride of place as one of only a handful of Canadian schools accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

Living in Nanaimo, BC

Located a short distance from Vancouver by ferry and enjoying a climate comparable to Western European cities and countries, Nanaimo is home to some-85,000 residents. Despite a reputation for being cold, British Columbia’s winters are relatively mild with warmer summers. Known for kitsch events like the world-famous bathtub race, VIU students never complain of boredom as Nanaimo plays host to a variety of pubs, bars, and restaurants. In fact, Nanaimo is loving referred to as the ‘Hub, Pub, and Tub City’ by locals.

Accommodation is offered in the form of on-campus dormitories and residences for students. Students living on campus enjoy single or shared living quarters, fully furnished communal rooms, high-speed WiFi, and access to the school’s gyms and bar.

Applying to VIU

VIU strives to ensure the application process is fair and simple. Prospective undergraduate applicants must complete an application form, provide official school transcripts translated from their native language to English, a personal statement covering why they want to study at VIU, and verified IELTS scores to a standard of 6.0 or higher.

For students who fail to achieve the minimum IELTS scores, admission to a preliminary English language program consisting of language and vocabulary courses is often granted. The program is completed before the start of the September semester and students are admitted to a program of their choice upon completion.
