Despite its size, Algonquin College manages to provide a friendly atmosphere focused on the well-being of its students. Their International Education Centre accompanies students as soon as they arrive so that they can succeed in their studies whilst taking full advantage of Canada and the canadian lifestyle.
Algonquin is a college, which is a higher education institution in which many students do their first two years of study before joining a university to complete the third and fourth years of a degree programme. The benefit of attending a college is the reduced tuition cost, and the ability to take more professional courses and obtaining the equivalent of an associates degree. But Algonquin also does full degree programmes : students complete the entirety of their education at Algonquin, without having to transfer to a university. The degree courses are : interior design ; e-Business ; logistics ; construction science ; and tourism and hospitality. Algonquin College also has partnerships with the University of Carleton for computer science programmes, and the University of Ottawa for nursing studies.
At Algonquin College, international students can directly join a course leading to assiociate degree or a bachelors degree, on the condition that they satisfy the entry requirements. You must have a baccalaureat and have passed an official english language test. The required scores on these test are : at least 80 for the TOEFL (internet version), or 6.0 on the IELTS. International students who don’t quite meet the entry requirements can nonetheless join the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programme. This full-time course, over 16 weeks, offers english language training in an academic environment. All the teachers arz TEFL (Teaching english as a foreign language) certified. This course is open to all levels of ability and includes reading, writing, speaking, listening, pronunciation and grammar. Students have 20 hours of lessons per week on top of several hours of independant study. The coure costs 5605,20 canadian dollars, or 3787 euros for 16 weeks.
Algonquin College has student halls on campus. It’s the ideal place to live as you can meet fellow students and it’s within walking distance of the classrooms. Each room has a shared bathroom. To ensure a happy cohabitation, Algonquin College sends out questionnaires to future residents to fid them a compatible roommate that shares their interests and lifestyle. The residences have a 24h security presence, games rooms, a laundry room and a TV room. The cost is 9210 canadian dollars – 6222 euros – for a school year, meals included.
You can also live with a canadian host family. In that case, students have their own room, internet access, and catered or self-catered. Living with a family costs 1150 canadian – or 777 euros – for eight weeks.
