The University of Newcastle (or UoN) is a public university located in Newcastle, near Sydney, in New South Wales. The university has a fantastic international reputation, being ranked 245th in the world by the QS World University Rankings in 2016. This puts it in the top 3% universities in the world. The cost of study is nonetheless more reminiscent of a more modest university, as a year’s tuition is 18 000 australian dollars, around 12 000 euros.
The University of Newcastle offers a variety of courses and programs at the undergraduate and post-graduate level. In particular, UON enjoys a reputation for stellar undergraduate programs in engineering, science, architecture, medicine, and law. UON also provides a variety of speciality post-graduate programs in law, architecture, science, engineering, education, accounting, finance, economics, computer science and much more.
As well as providing high end courses and programmes, UON is known for being a premier institution of research. In fact, a number of recent achievements have bolstered the university’s reputation and propelled a rise in global league tables. For example, a viral therapy designed to remove cancer cells, a method for separating minerals from coal waste water, and mechanisms to safely convert pollutants into useful materials have all earned UON internationally acclaim and prestige in recent years.

Located close to Sydney, UON has two main campuses. For students seeking an intimate, natural setting, the Callaghan campus (located 12km from Newcastle and 2 hours from Sydney) provides gorgeous landscapes and exceptional facilities. A second campus is located in Ourimbah, halfway between Sydney and Newcastle.
Students located near the central Newcastle campus are enjoy a variety of modern services including large campus libraries, a medical clinic, a coaching service for International Students, and widespread high-speed Wi-Fi access. Over 1,000 students live on the Callaghan campus due to the school’s proximity to Newcastle, with a variety of housing solutions available. Sports facilities include an Olympic-size swimming pool, gym, two martial arts studios, the second largest climbing wall in Australia, and indoor basketball and volleyball courts.
As with most higher education institutions in Australia, UON offers a variety of enrollment dates. Undergraduate students seeking a bachelor’s degree are admitted for enrollment in February or July, with master’s degree students admitted according to their degree.
Applicants must apply no later than four months before the beginning of their planned enrollment date. Prospective applicants must complete an application form, provide official school transcripts translated from their native language to English, letters of recommendation, a personal statement covering why they want to study at UON, and verified IELTS scores.
For students concerned with English language proficiency, UON offers courses in English through the ELICOS language school. The courses must be completed prior to admission to a bachelor’s or master’s degree if a student does not meet the IELTS score requirement.
