High quality and competitive prices, in the Bay area

Founded in 2000, IEC welcomes students from over 40 countries. Located in the San Francisco Bay area, this language center is part of Diablo Valley College: a community college benefiting from various partnerships with UC Berkeley, one of the best universities in the world.

IEC’s main mission is to prepare international students to university life in the USA, both on a linguistic and cultural level. English language programs, accommodation, and extra-curricular activities are all planned with care by the IEC team. All of the teachers at IEC have earned MAs TESOL from renowned universities. Beyond high-quality teaching, they also provide students with support and advice on academic subjects and on everyday issues. Students welfare is a priority at IEC.

After their training, about 95% of students from IEC move on to study at Diablo Valley College, a community college created in 1949. Thanks to the credit transfer system, students at Diablo Valley College can join — after two years of study — some of the best American universities such as UCLA and UC Berkeley.

IEC programs

IEC offers two types of programs: the Intensive English Program or the Academic Bridge Program.

Intensive English Program

This program is made up of six levels — from beginners to advanced learners. Upon arrival, students take a test in order to be placed in the level most suited to their abilities. Each level corresponds to an eight-week teaching block. Students are advised to take at least two months of classes. Students who already have an advanced level in English can integrate the Advanced B level. In this course, students are specifically trained to enter Diablo Valley College. In addition to English language classes, they develop the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the American higher education system: writing essays, taking notes, giving presentations, analyzing a text or a set of documents with a critical stance. Students in this course do not need to take the TOEFL in order to join Diablo Valley College. The Intensive English Program costs $3200 for 8 weeks.

Academic Bridge Program:

Directed at students with an advanced level in English, this is a bridge program preparing international students to enter the American higher education system. In this course, students take two academic modules which are validated at the end of their training. They obtain 6 credits that can be transferred to any California State university or to the University of California. This program lasts 8 weeks and costs $2700. International students can therefore complete the Academic Bridge program, join Diablo Valley College for their first two years of studies then transfer to a prestigious university to finish their Bachelor’s Degree.

Despite delivering high-quality teachings, Diablo Valley College and the IEC are very economical in comparison to other American schools. A year of study at Diablo Valley College costs between $6000 and $9400 whereas the University of California charges $47000.

The IEC also offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities to allow students to relax and put into practice the English learnt in class.

Life and studies in the Bay Area

Diablo Valley College is located in Pleasant Hill, a safe neighborhood with great transit links. The San Francisco Bay area is one of the most sought-after locations in the world. It is home to some of the best universities and to numerous touristic attractions too.

Students usually live with a homestay family. These are handpicked by the accommodation services team at IEC.

IEC offers a unique opportunity to improve in English and even to join an American university in the amazing San Francisco Bay Area. For more information on IEC and its programs, get in touch with a member of the Study Experience team.
