A semester in China : go to the next level

Founded in 1905, Fudan University is a renowned public university of over 44 300 students. The university organizes over 200 public conferences each year, as well as dozens of sporting events and hundreds of art expositions. The student union is very active : there are over 350 student clubs and over 500 events every year. The university has its own newspaper, numerous student publications ; but also its own radio station and television channel. And finally, it houses several libraries and sporting complexes.

Programmes et Specialties

The Contemporary Chinese Studies Programme is a unique programme offered by the faculty for Social Development and Public Policy. The programme is a semester long, and is geared towards graduates or final year bachelor students in the following disciplines : international business, asian studies, social and political studies, and international relations.

In this course, students choose from 15 academic modules, including : culture and contemporary society ; economics ; business ; marketing ; politics ; religion ; and even chinese cinema. They also have the possibility of undertaking an internship in a local business or organization. Those who take modules like business or marketing will learn the procedures unique to chinese companies and the key principles of the local economy. During excursions that complement the teaching, students will visit factories and businesses in Shanghai.

The teaching is entirely in english, but students take chinese language lessons at the same time, for which they are assigned to groups depending on their current ability. Progress is rapid.

Once there, international students have access toa free airport pickup service, and a three day orientation seminar at the beginning of the semester. They are partnered with a chinese students who will become their language buddy. A coordinator also supports the students for the duration of their stay.

The programme lasts 16 weeks, or 20 weeks if you go for the internship. At the end of the semester, students receive a diploma and transcript ; the programme is worth 34 ECTS.

Living and Studying in Shanghai

Shanghai is an astonishing mix between tradition and modernity. Of growing popularity among international sutdents, it’s a city in the middle of an economic boom, and also undergoing a cultural renaissance.

Students ar housed at Tohee International Student Village, a few minutes from campus. They are two or three bedroom apartments with one or two bathrooms, as well as a spacious living room, a kitchen, and a balcony.

Students on the international programme receive a student card and have access to all of the university infrastructure : computer labs, free wifi, libraries, restaurants, and gyms.

Joining Fudan University

You don’t need to be able to speak chinese to join the Contemporary Chinese Studies Programme but your english must be of a good standard. Candidates must also be motivated and demonstrate a real interest for China.

Tuition costs 7500 euros. This includes school supplies, application fees, excursions, the airport pickup service, orientation sessions, and the internship service charge. Housing costs around 1200 to 1760 euros depending on the type and the duration of the stay. In total, plan for 8700 to 9260 euros all included for a semester of study at Fudan.

The programme takes place from february to june, or september to december. The deadlines to apply are end of november for a february start, and end of may for a september start.
