Bournemouth & Poole College is one of Britain’s largest community colleges, home to approximately 11,000 students from both the UK and 40 other countries. It consists of two campuses, located in the coastal towns of Bournemouth and Poole. The College offers academic, vocational and foundation degree programmes, as well as apprenticeship training. The college works with over 2000 businesses in the area to provide students with access to training, work experience and real-life projects. International students have access to specialist programmes, including intensive English language courses and pathway opportunities.

Life at Bournemouth & Poole College

Bournemouth & Poole has a very active student community. The Student’s Union ensures that there are plenty of clubs, events and activities in place throughout the year to entertain students, including a host of sports and fitness activities at the college’s recently launched Fitness Centre. Bournemouth & Poole offers both recreational and competitive sporting activities including surfing, rugby, tennis, volleyball, football, Zumba, cricket, table tennis and many more. Students also have access to a fully equipped gym and fitness studios. In addition, the college organises trips for students, some of which have included surf trips, excursions to theme parks and shopping trips to London.

English Courses

At Bournemouth & Poole, international students are able to take up one of three programmes to improve their level of English:

General and Intensive English

This programme aims to improve students’ level of reading, writing, speaking and listening in English, as well as their knowledge and understanding of English grammar and vocabulary. Students will be offered help and practice in how to study for all parts of the IELTS examination. Their English will be brought up to the correct level to be able to continue with further programmes at the College or at a UK university. Students may choose to pursue a flexible (15 hours/week) or a full-time (21 hours/week) course. Average class size is 16 students.

English Plus

The English Plus programme is a 12-week course of intensive English language lessons, which also allows students to take up additional subjects. It aims to prepare students for the IELTS examinations and further university level studies. Students study 21 hours/week (15 hours of English lessons & 6 hours of additional subjects). Additional subjects on offer include the following; art & design, business, beauty therapy, IT & computing, hairdressing, humanities, music, sports & fitness, travel & tourism.

International Access to University

The International Access to University programme is a preparation programme structured over an academic year, which includes subject specific content combined with core subjects and other modules. It also provides English language and study support alongside the main programme. The college offers excellent sources and highly skilled staff to ensure that students are successful in their studies. The teaching methods employed include a mix of classroom-based activities, supported self-study and blended learning as well as tutorial support. The programme enables students to gain direct progression to the first year of an undergraduate programme at a UK university.

Students can choose from the following seven subject areas:

  1. Art & Design

Art & design courses on offer at the college include fashion, fine arts, graphics, textiles & illustration and photography among many more. Students will also have access to fully-equipped studios offering industry standard computer hardware and software, excellent printmaking facilities, photography studios as well as workshop and fine art facilities. Students will present their art and design projects at the end of year exhibition.

  1. Business Studies

The college offers courses in business, accounting, marketing and economics. The school works closely with local businesses to offer students the opportunity to benefit from networking events, guest speakers, visits to local and national companies and work placements. Students will also work on an integrated assignment throughout the year.

  1. Computing

Computing students will be given an introduction into computer programming, web technologies and system analysis, whilst also learning about e-commerce, computer networks, data-basing and java programming. They will also work on an integrated assignment throughout the year.

  1. Humanities & Social Science

Students completing the humanities and social science course will be able to choose from subjects including law, literary studies, psychology, sociology, history and global politics whilst developing specific study skills and independent research techniques. They will also work on an integrated assignment throughout the year.

  1. Media

Media students will study topics including photography, graphic design, website development amongst many more. They will also work on an integrated assignment throughout the year and have access to the school’s excellent facilities such as the photography studio, digital design suites and green screen room.

  1. Music

Whether students want to specialise in music performance, music technology, sound engineering or live sound management, they will gain high-level technical skills and academic knowledge at the college. Students will also have access to state-of-the-art music recording facilities and work on an individual project throughout the year.

  1. Performing Arts

Students are able to study a multitude of specialist subjects as part of their performing arts course, in turn gaining a range of transferrable skills in contemporary dance, acting, stage design and singing. Students will also have the opportunity to work with visiting industry professionals and take part in two full scale theatre productions at the college. They will also work on an integrated assignment throughout the year.

  1. Science

The college offers courses in biology, chemistry, higher maths, physics, psychology and environmental science. With the help of the college’s facilities, students will develop their lab skills and through specialist maths lessons, will strengthen their knowledge and practice of their chosen subject.
